Canine Influenza – Yes, your dog can get the flu

Our area has recently had an outbreak of canine influenza and there have been fatalities from it. The flu is a highly contagious disease which can severely compromise your dog’s respiratory system. There are currently 2 strains of the virus (H3N8 and H3N2) which are capable of quickly mutating and possibly infect other species. (Source AVMA website)

Vaccinations are available for both strains and can be an effective method of defense if your dog(s) may be exposed to areas of contamination. The virus can remain in the environment for up to 2 days. Be mindful of areas where your dog may come in contact with this disease.

Our pet care facilities, such as veterinary clinics, boarding facilities, and groomers have done well to take extra precautions to reduce the spread of the flu. If you believe your dog has been exposed or is showing signs of the disease, contact your veterinarian and consult on the proper protocols in place to prevent spread and treat your dog immediately.
